Neodymium (NdFeb) magnets from the rare earth magnet family are classified in degrees. Below we explain what the different letters and numbers represent in the traditional encoding.
The encoding of neodymium magnets commonly used on the market begins with the letter N, to recall the family of permanent magnets to which they belong. This is followed by numbers indicating the maximum energy product of the magnet expressed in MGOe "Mega Gauss Oersteds". This is a primary indication of the magnetic pull force of the magnets. In fact, the higher this figure, the higher the value of the maximum energy product of the permanent magnet, the wider and more intense the magnetic field will be.
Generally on the market there are magnets in Neodymium Iron Boron with grades ranging from N30 to N52. Lower grades are usually used in applications considered simple, such as packaging or souvenirs. ODB Magnets by corporate policy does not include in its offer grades below N33, often coming from processing waste, having decided to focus on certified quality products.
Grades with a high value of maximum energy product are used where the greatest magnetic attractive force must be obtained for the same size, overall dimensions and working distance. With the support of our technical department we will help you to find the best compromise between the different factors that determine the magnetic function. The correct sizing of the permanent magnet, and the working distances, determines the necessary magnetic degree, and consequently the containment of costs.
In the encoding of the magnets in Neodymium, letters are often found to follow the numerical characters, these indicate the maximum operating temperature at which the magnet may be working before losing magnetism permanently.
